A Stolen Life

A Stolen Life

One of the weird things about myself is I like to read books and watch shows about kidnapped victims. Such shows like Law and Order, Criminal Minds, and 60 Minutes and Dateline are my favorites! Over a year ago, I worked for a garage sale to raise money for a mission trip to Belize, and at the end of the day we were allowed to take two items from the sale with us. Of course I headed straight to the book section and came across this book. I remembered hearing about her story on one of the many Dateline series I had watched, but I hadn't a clue she had actually wrote about it.

This is NOT a book for the young or the faint-hearted. This is a book, a memoir, of Jaycee Dugard herself recollecting, in specific detail, everything that had happened to her in the eighteen years she was held captive by her kidnapper. I won't lie, there were times in the book where I had to sit it to the side and breath, think, and pray over the horrific things she had to go through.

So you may be asking, "Well, why in the world did you read it in the first place?", well, I felt like it was something I needed to read. If she had to go through this experience, then why could I not read about it and pray for those who have went through the same situations or are currently, God forbid, going through it as well? They need their story to be heard, and as Jaycee Dugard quoted in the book, she needed to "stop protecting her kidnapper" and let herself be free.

Like I said before, this book is not for the youngsters. This is a mature, adult book. Before you read this, I recommend you come in with a open mind, and know that, yes, there are evil people in this world, but good always prevails over evil, even if it takes eighteen years.
 Never give up hope.
