The Hype of "Sixteen Candles"

The Hype of "Sixteen Candles"

This past weekend, my boyfriend and decided to take an adventure and locate the best deals around town! We found that the store Game Exchange was having a 20 for $20 deal on all DVD movies, and we took the plunge! Of course, my boyfriend had the most movies in his hand, but I felt good with the five choices I made! One of the many I chose was the classic 80's movie "Sixteen Candles". Yes, I am now ashamed to say that prior to this day, I had only seen "The Breakfast Club". I know, I'm a horrible person! But fear not! I watched this movie with absolutely NO distractions and from the first scene to the last, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Now, I will be honest with you, I felt so connected to this movie that I feel like, in my opinion, it was better than "The Breakfast Club".

PLEASE DON'T SHOOT ME!!!

Yes, yes I know! You are probably screaming at me right now, but let me explain!

 Samantha Baker

Compared to Molly Ringwald's character Claire Standish, I felt like I connected with Samantha Baker more on a real level. Claire was a stuck-up, rich, popular girl who thought the world owed her everything and wouldn't even take a second glance at anyone beneath her rank. Samantha, on the other hand, was on the other side of that rank and she felt like she was invisible to the world. Samantha was your typical teenager; girly, boy-crazy, and thought everything in her life was never going to be right. She was in love with the boy-next-door guy, who of course is the most popular, good-looking guy at her High School, and doesn't even know she's exists. This is the type of teen-novels I LOVE reading, because I felt exactly her character at one time! I felt a connection with Samantha the moment she locked eyes with hunky Jake Ryan.

We were one.

Been there done that...

And with the drama of a teenage girl's love-life, you know there has to be some kind of comedic relief, and that was Anthony Michael Hall's character as the Geek. He was cracking me up from the first scene to the last scene with him.

But even though there was such comedic relief and the connection I had to the main characters personality, I felt like there were a few hiccups in the movie that I was a tad bit confused about.

For example, when one of the first few statements out of Samantha's mouth is the F-bomb, I was a bit shocked, but decided to let it pass. But as the movie progressed, I noticed the language in the movie was very blunt, especially the scene with Samantha and the Geek on the bus. Although I laughed, I just couldn't believe what I was hearing! Then when Samantha's at school and her best friend and her peep on Caroline(the sexy-hot, blonde girlfriend of Jake Ryan's) while she's in the shower, we then see her butt-naked! At that point of the movie, I turned by DVD movie box over to see the rating and was utterly shocked to see that the movie was only rated PG. A naked teenage girl, foul language, and conversations of sexual situations, and this movie is only PG???

That's crazy!!!

I didn't realize though, that this movie was going to be in different peoples viewpoints. I thought the movie was only going to be in Samantha Baker's point of view, but as the movie progressed we jump from her, to Jake Ryan, to the Geek and his buddies, to Samantha Baker's family, and even the quirky relationship of the foreign exchange student Long Duk Dong!

Now, can someone please explain to me this crazy relationship? First off, who is the girl? Is she some athletically fit student whose just super tall and apparently attracted to Asians? Or was she a Coach or some teacher that was in an inappropriate relationship with him? I was very confused with the whole situation, yet very humored.

And then the relationship with Caroline and the Geek. I had NO idea where the scene was going with Jake giving the Geek a chance to sleep with his sexy-hot girlfriend while she was drunk, let alone HOW they ended up together at the end of the movie! I mean, technically he took advantage of her, but yet she wakes up fully sober and is instantly attracted to him? That makes no sense at all!

And as for the iconic scene where the whole internet portrays the movie when you Google image the title, the birthday cake scene! Now, I was enjoying the movie up to the end; Samantha has won the heart of hunky Jake Ryan! Woot woot!!! Congrats girl! And the scene fades and shes in his house with a birthday cake in between them, and she finally gets to celebrate her long-forgotten birthday with the man of her dreams. She declares that her wishes have already been granted and he kisses her, then the background goes blank...

THAT'S ALL?!?

So you're telling me this iconic scene that everyone knows is done within 15 seconds? Nothing else? No glimpse into the future of their lasting relationship?? Just that?! Wow...I was defiantly expecting a more fulfilling ending to be honest. Oh well...

But other then that, I did thoroughly enjoy the movie, and will put it in my top 20 faves for sure! Now I must watch all movies with Molly Ringwald now.

Until next time.

Ciao! ✌️
